Two Types of Risk

Have you ever heard of the Grizzly Man? There was a documentary with that title released in 2005 following the life and tragic death of bear enthusiast and advocate Timothy Treadwell. As I was reading about his story I realized that there are some interesting parallels to the questions and concerns raised about open missions in China. First, here are the basic reactions people have to Grizzly Man. Well Duh… The most......

Titus and Timothy

The pastoral epistles have something to say about church planting. Well, they have a lot to say since Paul instructs Titus and Timothy how to establish and lead churches in Crete and Ephesus. Interestingly, there is a difference in the instructions he gives to the two men. The scholars say that the church in Crete was younger, less mature, and “unpromising” and Paul’s instructions reflect that. In Ephesus, the church was likely......

A Life Well Lived

We sat across the table with a lovely couple named Philip and Julie Parshall. They told us it was refreshing and encouraging to see Philip and I giving our lives to serve God overseas at our age. Mr. and Mrs. Parshall served the Muslim communities in Bangladesh and the Philippines. I listened to their stories and I had to ask these questions, “What kept you going? How did you continue to serve others with the Gospel when you didn’t......

Advance the Gospel

I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.  Philippians 1:12 Paul’s faith in a good and sovereign God led him to be more concerned about the advance of the gospel than his own circumstances, specifically in this case, being locked up! This is such a simple idea. It is taught and preached very frequently. But I believe we rarely, if ever, fully......

Why Churches?

The process we are using to raise support is a little different than what most people do these days. We are primarily asking churches rather than individuals to partner with us. Currently, most ministry workers that raise support primarily ask individuals for support. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, but we feel it is more strategic for us to partner with churches. There are many reasons why we are going......

The Gospel Brings Us Together

When I think about Martin Luther King Jr. I tend to be at awe for everything he has done. I believe Martin Luther King Jr. was pointing to a specific place, someone greater. He was pointing to heaven. He gave us a glimpse of of another man, perfect and sinless unlike himself. A man who stood against political forces, suffered, and paid an un-payable debt. This man’s dream was not only to put away......

Anonymous

From blogger Edmond Sanganyado whose article was featured on Challies.com today. Last year, I learned a very important lesson that helped shape everything I did, although with challenges here and there. It was from a book appropriately titled, Embracing Obscurity: Becoming Nothing in Light of God’s Everything, by, you guessed right, Anonymous. There’s a lot of speculation regarding who the author is with some convinced it’s Francis Chan. Whoever the author is, they......

OG Summit Recap

Sara and I spent last week at the Our Generation Summit in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. It is a ministry of Vision Baptist Missions that they have hosted for at least the last decade. It was my fifth time at the conference so I think I have a pretty good idea of what the conference is about. Here are a few things that make this conference stand out in my mind. ⇒ Actual......
